The Consular Sections of the Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C. and the Finnish Consulate Generals in New York and Los Angeles assist Finnish citizens and foreigners permanently living in Finland with issues concerning consular services according to the Consular Act. Finnish missions cannot answer questions falling under the U.S. authorities' jurisdiction.

The Consular Sections assist the citizens in distress. The missions provide assistance and advice as well as act as intermediaries under their competence. Services include: passports and notarial services as well as forwarding information to the Finnish Population Information System. Embassy and the Consulate Genelars also give information regarding travel safety and circumstances in the US. Advance voting of the Finnish elections in the US is also arranged by the Finnish missions.

Finnish Embassies and Consulates can

  • help victims of sudden illness, accidents or crimes so they can get the medical care or other immediate assistance they need
  • help those in distress or in crisis situations and those taken into custody to get in touch with their next of kin
  • grant a temporary passport for repatriation (to replace an outdated, lost, stolen or destroyed passport)
  • advise how to transfer money through a bank or another money transfer company (such as Western Union)
  • transfer funds to help those in distress
  • contact the insurance company in case of sickness or death

Finnish Embassies and Consulates cannot

  • act contrary to the law of the state
  • handle matters that fall within the purview of other authorities
  • pay hotel, hospital or other bills, pay fines or post bail
  • pay the cost of using a lawyer or interpreter
  • stand surety or make payment commitments
  • act as a lawyer or legal advisor
  • intervene in a legal process or request a specific court ruling
  • affect the release of an arrested or imprisoned person

Honorary Consuls

  • May provide assistance with contacting the local authorities or the nearest Finnish Embassy or Consulate General
  • Have limited capability to help. They cannot for example accept passport, visa or residence permit applications
