Nordic Ambassadors Sailed Through D.C. Capital Pride Parade on Viking Ship!

Pride month is celebrated here in the United States.  Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C. together with the Nordic colleagues reaffirmed the importance of equality and equal rights for all through various Pride activities.

Nordic Ambassadors, Embassy staff, and friends were marching together on Capital Pride Parade to show support for the LGBTQI+ community.

Hot and humid D.C. weather didn't stop the Nordics enjoying the city's festive atmosphere. On Saturday 9th of June, around 100 people walked together to finest tunes of Nordic music, wearing rainbow flag colored t-shirts. The 2018 parade was the third Capital Pride march for the Nordic Embassies. Honoring the continuing of Pride tradition, a Viking themed float was introduced!

Thousands of people watched the parade crawl through central D.C. The mood was festive and viewers enjoyed dancing to Nordic music!

Digital Diplomacy Reached Millions

Partnering with the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization in the US, Human Rights Campaign, the five heads of missions were answering public's questions about equality and LGBTQI+ rights for one hour on Twitter. You can have a look at the questions and answers on Twitter by searching the hashtag #AskNordicAmbs.

Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi shared facts and figures about Finland's steps towards equal rights for the American and global audiences.

This act of Nordic digital diplomacy reached over 2 million users on Twitter, allowing the Ambassadors to use the social media platform to amplify the Nordics' message about human rights issues.

Showing Your Pride

Equality is a fundamental value in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Marriage equality is the law and same-sex couples are able to adopt children in all five countries. Promoting equal rights abroad is also a central foreign policy priority for all the Nordic countries.

Prior to the start of Saturday’s parade, the Nordic embassies organized a networking reception in the form of a "Pre-Pride Event". Nearly 200 representatives were present from Congress (both congressmen and staffers) and various organizations involved in LGBTQI+ rights.
Next to the Pre-Pride venue, Ambassadors Kirsti Kauppi, Kåre R. Aas, and Lars Gert Lose spotted a nearby zebra crossing being painted in the rainbow colors in honor of Pride.

Nordic Embassies around the world keep working together to promote human rights all around the world with Ambassador Kauppi's words echoing in our mind: "Equal treatment everywhere and for all, full human rights, no discrimination – free to be who you are!"

Common hashtag which the Nordic embassies are using in the United States is #Nordics4Equality.
