Kardemimmit is a group of four Finnish women who play the ancient Finnish national instrument kantele, a stringed instrument with a silvery sound. Founded in 1999, the band has published four albums and toured in Europe, North America and Japan over the course of their career.
This spring, the band will appear on stage in four American cities: Bloomington (IN), Washington (IA), Aberdeen (SD) and Devil's Lake (ND).
The U.S. tour by Kardemimmit is a part of a series of events called the 2017–2019 Arts Midwest Folkefest. Its aim is to present traditional music ensembles from Finland and Sweden for intensive, week-long residencies, featuring public performances and educational activities designed for all ages and levels of musical experience.
The program visits small and mid-sized communities in six Midwestern states—North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan—all of which experienced a significant influx of Scandinavian immigrants during the 1800s and 1900s.
