Orchestra, dance and a renowned conductor Susanna Mälkki join forces at Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2018!
In this program, Principal Guest Conductor Susanna Mälkki cuts across a vast range of German music, featuring our brilliant Principal Cellist Robert deMaine in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s highly colorful and uniquely creative concerto from 1966, complete with dancers, as originally intended.
Collaborating with Mälkki will be celebrated Finnish choreographer-dancer Tero Saarinen and his ensemble.
The massive orchestra that nature lover Richard Strauss requires for his depiction of an Alpine climb makes this work one of his largest non-operatic works; it was also his last purely orchestral work.
Not a conventional symphony, it is really a series of 22 linked scenes, played continuously, that describe a daylong mountain trek. Its vast dynamic range and epic sound has made the work a real favorite of the audiophile community – the first test pressing of a compact disc was of An Alpine Symphony.
