Finland celebrates 100 years of independence in 2017 with centennial events throughout the United States. In Washington, D.C., the two biggest public events will be a Finnish Midsummer celebration on the National Mall on June 17 and a Finnish Christmas festival at Dupont Circle on December 2. In addition, the Embassy will showcase e.g. Finland’s education system, design and architecture, Arctic “snowhow” and Finnish expertise in health-tech.
One of the most exciting centennial projects will be the Traveling Sauna. The sauna will travel across the entire continent, from West Coast through Mid-West to East Coast, over 10,000 miles. The sauna is Finland’s centennial mascot, and the project is executed by Ice Cold Marketing representatives Jouko Sipilä and Risto Sivula. Ambassador of Finland Kirsti Kauppi will inaugurate the sauna in Minneapolis on January 14.

“Finland has come so far in the past hundred years, from a poor and fledgling country in the periphery of Europe to one of the most stable, safe, prosperous and innovative nations in the world. We have reason to be grateful, and proud of our story. We are honored to share it with our friends all across this great country that has been our friend throughout these years,” Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi stated.
