Finland Celebrates Its Centennial in the U.S. – A Traveling Sauna and More

Finland celebrates 100 years of independence in 2017 with centennial events throughout the United States. In Washington, D.C., the two biggest public events will be a Finnish Midsummer celebration on the National Mall on June 17 and a Finnish Christmas festival at Dupont Circle on December 2. In addition, the Embassy will showcase e.g. Finland’s education system, design and architecture, Arctic “snowhow” and Finnish expertise in health-tech.

One of the most exciting centennial projects will be the Traveling Sauna. The sauna will travel across the entire continent, from West Coast through Mid-West to East Coast, over 10,000 miles. The sauna is Finland’s centennial mascot, and the project is executed by Ice Cold Marketing representatives Jouko Sipilä and Risto Sivula. Ambassador of Finland Kirsti Kauppi will inaugurate the sauna in Minneapolis on January 14.

The Embassy has asked 100 famous Finnish-Americans or friends of Finland to send their greetings to the centenarian. On these videos, people tell about their personal relationship with Finland. Astronaut Timothy Kopra shares how beautiful Finland looks from space, NHL players Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund say they are proud to represent Finland in the U.S., and film director Renny Harlin explains how much he misses his home country. The videos will be published on the Embassy’s social media sites throughout the year. First video (Conan O’Brien):

The video campaign highlights include:
John Koskinen, IRS Commissioner
Jorma Kaukonen, Jefferson Airplane guitarist
Bonita Pietila, Casting Director and Producer of the Simpsons
Kaija Saariaho, Composer
David Chokachi, Actor (best known for his role as Cody Madison in Baywatch)
We are still waiting for Matt Damon to reply…

The Embassy will also publish a 12-part “Centennial Story of Finland” on its social media sites.

“Finland has come so far in the past hundred years, from a poor and fledgling country in the periphery of Europe to one of the most stable, safe, prosperous and innovative nations in the world. We have reason to be grateful, and proud of our story. We are honored to share it with our friends all across this great country that has been our friend throughout these years,” Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi stated.
