New learning spaces in the 21st century must meet today's educational needs, taking into consideration educational progress and changing modes of learning. What is the role of the city and state in the changing design of schools? How do policymakers play an active role in shaping today’s schools, and society’s young minds? Public architects and educational policy leaders from Finland and New York will compare best practices in school design policy, as well as the role of design competitions for educational facilities.

Mr. Pasi Sahlberg, Director General of CIMO, an organization for international mobility and cooperation, and an independent agency under the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture
Ms. Kaisa Nuikkinen, Head Architect for School Design at the Helsinki City Education Department
New York Speaker:
Bruce Barrett, AIA, Vice President, Architecture and Engineering, New York City School Construction Authority
Moderator: Samuel E. Abrams, Research Associate, Teachers College, Columbia University

The exhibition and related programs are organized by the Center for Architecture in collaboration with the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, and the Consulate General of Finland in New York.
