Secretary-General of the OECD Àngel Gurría to visit Finland

Ángel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will visit Finland on 19-20 January. The Secretary-General, arriving to Finland at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen, will meet the highest state leaders and give a speech at the anniversary seminar assessing the meaning of Finland’s 40-year membership of the OECD.

Secretary-General Gurría will meet President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, Minister Väyrynen, who is the co-ordinator of the OECD affairs, Minister of Finance Jyrki Katainen, Minister of Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen, Minister of the Environment Paula Lehtomäki, Minister of Public Administration and Local Government Mari Kiviniemi and Minister of Education Henna Virkkunen. The Secretary-General will also discuss with the leaders of the Confederation of Finnish Industries EK and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions and the representatives of the Bank of Finland.

The purpose of the meetings is to discuss the OECD's topical activities of interest to Finland, the organisation’s global role from the point of view of both economy and society and the question how the organisation is going to address the challenges of globalisation, and how the Finns feel it should be done.

Secretary-General Gurría and Prime Minister Vanhanen will give the main addresses at the anniversary seminar ”Finland’s 40 years of learning together with OECD”, to be held on 20 January.
