Two top Finnish jazz acts, Iro Haarla Quintet and Timo Lassy Band, will perform in Washington, New York and the Rochester International Jazz Festival from June 13 to June 18.
Iro Haarla is a pianist, harpist and composer - an acclaimed jazz artist, whose contribution to the Finnish jazz scene has been important for more than a decade. She has released solo albums, composed music for UMO Jazz Orchestra and been awarded national prizes such as the Jazz Emma and the Georgie award. Iro Haarla Quintet consists of top jazz musicians of many ages - but all of them have already won their spurs. The music they perform on this tour is from Iro's album "Northbound" released on ECM and commended by the critics.
Iro Haarla Quintet will perform at the Nordic Jazz 2008 concert series on Friday, June 13, at the House of Sweden's magnificent rooftop terrace. The band can also be seen in New York City at the Scandinavia House on June 16, and at the Rochester International Jazz Festival in New York state on June 18. From Rochester the band will continue their North American tour to major Canadian jazz festivals.
Timo Lassy is a Helsinki-based sax player who likes his sound big. There is a bluesy and soulful undertone as well as a spiritual side to be heard in his playing. As The Guardian´s John L. Walters put it: ”Saxophonist Timo Lassy has storytelling approach to solos”. One of the most talented musicians of his generation, Lassy is not a newcomer in the jazz scene. Prior to his solo debut in 2007, Timo has played in many outfits, such as the Blue Note recording U-Street All Stars, and the globe-trotting The Five Corners Quintet.
After a gig at the Rochester Festival on June 13, Timo Lassy band will play in New York City on June 14 and 15.
