New Finnish Literature Sparks Interest in the U.S.

Finnish literature is gaining more recognition in the U.S. In recent years, the American audiences have been introduced to Finnish Noir as well as young adult literature. This fall Sofi Oksanen’s Norma will join the ranks of Finnish novels published in the U.S.

Norma by Sofi Oksanen

New Finnish authors’ works extend from the Nordic Noir genre and somewhat biographical novels to young adult literature and fantasy. In the past few years, many Finnish authors have had their works published in English. For example Emmi Itäranta’s Memory of Water, a tale about a dystopian future where fresh water is scarce was published in English in 2014, and Pajtim Statovci’s novel My Cat Yugoslavia was released in the U.S. in spring of 2017.

This fall Sofi Oksanen’s new novel Norma will be published in the U.S. Oksanen is an internationally best-selling Finnish-Estonian novelist and playwright, best known for her novels Purge and When the Doves Disappeared. Her new novel Norma, set in present-day Helsinki, tells a story of a young woman with a fantastical secret who is trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s death. Oksanen has received numerous prizes for her work, including the Swedish Academy Nordic Prize, the Prix Femina, the Budapest Grand Prize, the European Book Prize, and the Nordic Council Literature Prize.

Sofi Oksanen is doing a short book tour in the U.S. in September to promote her new novel.
