New Yorkers often feel like they live in the capital
of the world. One might agree upon considering the diplomatic representation
thriving in the city. The diplomatic corps in New York is the largest in the
world comprised of approximately 190 permanent representations to the United
Nations and more than 100 consulates.
The Finnish Consulate General strives to oversee the interests of Finland
and her citizens. Our goal is also to raise Finland’s profile in New York
and in as many as 37 states that fall under our jurisdiction. To achieve
this we cooperate with a network of 19 honorary consuls, each with a deep
knowledge of their area.
New York is an international center of media, culture, economy and capital
markets, an environment that is directly translated into the main areas of
the consulate’s activity.
Finnish music and design have been highlighted in the media for many years
here, often hinting at our status as a cultural super power. We scan the
image of Finland in the media and have learned to our satisfaction that the
reports and quotations on Finland and on her policy do not contain mistakes
or prejudices. We also follow regulative trends in financial markets and try
to sharpen the image of Finland on the radar screen of potential American
investors. In short, encouraging exports from Finland and importing jobs to
Finland through investments are among our priorities. Our main partners are
Finpro trade centers, the Finnish Tourist Board, the Finnish-American
Chamber of Commerce, and the Invest in Finland Bureau.
Among our other priorities is to provide exceptional service regarding
consular matters. In general, American tourists do not need a visa to enter
Finland if their stay does not exceed 90 days, nonetheless there are a
significant number of foreigners living in our area of jurisdiction who do
need a visa when travelling to Finland. Annually we personally serve
approximately 1000 individuals - Finns, Americans and citizens of other
countries - and answer about 4000 requests received by telephone, mail or
e-mail.
