Ambassador Kauppi Visited Colorado

Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi visited Colorado on April 26-29 on one of her Finland Centennial trips this year. The Ambassador had a very busy schedule – she gave several speeches, visited local universities and met with state officials, including Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor of Denver Michael Hancock, as well as with members of the Finnish-American community.

The Ambassador’s visit focused on innovation, research and higher education. She visited Colorado State University, University of Denver and University of Colorado and discussed possible partnerships with the university administration, as well as with students. In addition, she gave speeches about Finland’s role in the world and what makes Finland so great for education, research and innovation. Ambassador Kauppi gave one of the speeched on how Finland punches above its weight in international politics at the Colorado Foothills World Affairs Council.

The Colorado European Union Center of Excellence and the Finlandia Foundation of Colorado helped to organize the program for Ambassador Kauppi. The two organizations co-hosted an evening reception at the University Club where both Finns and friends of Finland were enthusiastic to hear more about about Finland in the EU.

The local universities have world class expertise in meteorological and atmospheric research. Ambassador Kauppi became familiar with this field while visiting, for example, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado, and meeting with Tony Busalacchi, President of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

The Finnish company Vaisala has a strong presence in Colorado. It is a global leader in environmental and industrial measurement, and provides innovative measurement and observation products and services for weather-related and industrial markets. Ambassador Kauppi visited the Vaisala office in Colorado and learned about the cooperation they have with the Colorado State University.

Ambassador Kauppi also had an opportunity to meet with local officials. She visited the Colorado State Capitol and was hosted by State Representative Paul Rosenthal. The Ambassador’s presence and Finland’s Centennial were recognized both at the sessions of the House and the Senate.

Colorado has a very active Finnish-American community. Ambassador Kauppi was happy to meet with many members of the community at the Finland 100th Anniversary Social hosted by Finlandia Foundation of Colorado. She sends her warm thank you for all who contributed to a very successful visit in Colorado and special thanks to our excellent Honorary Consul Juha Mäkikalli!
