The best of Nordic Jazz cooling off Washington's summer

Nordic Jazz 2012

The embassies of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland present the summer's coolest jazz event, the Nordic Jazz Week, in D.C. from June 22 to 30. Finnish jazz pianist Iiro Rantala - solo and Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir Trio from Iceland will fill the Finnish Embassy with their unique tunes on June 27.

The Nordic Jazz Week brings the brightest talents of the Nordic scene to cool off Washington's sweltering summer nights. The Embassy of Finland hosts one of the many concerts on June 27, presenting two unique musical performances, Iiro Rantala – solo (Finland) and Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir Trio (Iceland).

Iiro Rantala (born 1970, in Helsinki) is one of the best known Finnish jazz pianists, both in Finland and abroad. He has studied piano in the jazz department of Sibelius Academy and classical piano in Manhattan School of Music. Rantala is a pianist and composer of Trio Töykeät, a Finnish jazz trio. In addition to jazz, he has composed some classical pieces - most notably, the Concerto for Piano and Concerto in G♯ΔA♭.

Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir is an Icelandic jazz pianist and will join Iiro Rantala with her trio at the Embassy of Finland. The Washington Post described her music as possessing "such timeless virtues as lyricism and grace... elegantly bridges soul- searching passages with uncluttered swing." Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir reaffirms that assesment on her latest CD, "Long Pair Bond" which features fellow Icelander bassist Thorgrimur Jónsson and long-time cohort Scott McLemore on drums. It’s her first trio album since her debut in 1997, and now a more mature, more experienced Gunnlaugs presents this music in an unhurried, contemplative fashion.
