Designers Paola Suhonen and Tiia Vanhatapio will bring Finnish flavors to New York Fashion Week this year. Suhonen’s IVANAhelsinki is the first Finnish fashion brand ever to have its own runway show during this prestigious week in September. Tiia Vanhatapio will be showing her collection on the Nordic runway.

IVANAhelsinki’s show on September 16 will be the first of its kind among Finnish fashion designer brands. Head Designer Paola Ivana Suhonen is behind the independent fashion and art brand IVANAhelsinki. The provocatively entitled ‘Where The F*ck Is My Sailor’ SS11 collection heralds heavily Nordic-inspired designs, with an unique twist on trademark prints featuring anchor motifs lifted from old-school sailor tattoo designs.

Tiia Vanhatapio will participate with her ‘Druidess’ SS11 collection in a runway show featuring Nordic designers - ‘Nordic: New York,’ on September 14.  The show is organized by The King Collective, a New York based fashion sales and market strategy firm. The number one seller of Vanhatapio’s collection is a black satin cocktail number with pockets: the Mamie Dress, which is the key piece among her classic designs. Recently she was dubbed the “Queen of Cocktail Dress” by the Scandinavian press.

Breaking through to international markets

Suhonen’s and Vanhatapio’s work has been well known in Finland for over a decade. In fact, Vanhatapio has reached an almost cult-like status in her home country since emerging as one of Finland’s leading female rockabilly singers in the 1990s. After receiving an MA from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, she developed an edgy, sultry fashion line for women. One of her followers is the American burlesque star Dita von Teese who owns several pieces, including Mamie.

Suhonen’s IVANAhelsinki is a family-owned company that débuted its first collection in 1998, and even though Suhonen now lives in Los Angeles, having recently moved there from New York, all his knits are manufactured in Finland and the hand-made knits in Lapland. Since first appearing, IVANAhelsinki has gone on to sell in over twenty countries, and the brand is regularly featured on the pages of international Elle and Vogue. In New York, IVANAhelsinki is sold in Honey in the Rough (161 Rivington Str.), Legacy (109 Thompson Str.) and in the internet store www.sundaybrunchdress.com. In spring 2010, IVANAhelsinki also had its own pop-up store in SoHo.
