Photo: Finnish Tourist BoardWant to learn more about your Finnish roots? A course in Finland this summer offers a great opportunity to dig deeper into one's Nordic heritage.

This summer, a course called Searching the Roots offers people with Finnish background a unique chance to learn Finnish, study Finnish culture and research their rich Nordic heritage.

Searching the Roots is designed for all persons of Finnish heritage who are interested to learn more about their Nordic roots. The course is organized in South Ostrobothnia, Finland, between July 26 and August 6, 2010. All tuition is in English.

During the course the participants will

  • learn about South Ostrobothnia and its culture
  • visit The Institute of Migration, situated in Peräseinäjoki
  • hear lectures about the history of migration to America
  • experience nature through various trips
  • prepare traditional Finnish delicacies and study Finnish
  • learn how to research genealogy (both North American and Finnish sources of genealogical research and their methods)

During the weekend of August 1-2 there is no tuition, which means participants have the possibility to visit relatives or friends.

Course fee: 590 euros including tuition, meals and accommodation in a double room.

The course is organized by South Ostrobothnia Folk High School in cooperation with The Institute of Migration. South Ostrobothnia Folk High School in Ilmajoki has long traditions; it was founded in 1892 and it is situated in a rural environment which is culturally historical and naturally beautiful.
